The Terminal List Episode 1 “The Engram”- Guns – Gear – & Featured Brands

THE TERMINAL LIST

S01E01 "The Engram"

Guns - Gear - Featured Brands

The 2022 Amazon Prime exclusive series, The Terminal List, is based on the NY Times’ #1 best-selling book by Jack Carr under the same name. This is definitely in my top three favorite shows of all time. It’s also quite possibly the most realistic journey into the dark places someone is capable of going if they are pushed hard enough.

Here are links to the other episode’s breakdowns:

Episode 3, “Consolidation”

Episode 4, “Detachment”

Table of Contents

I enjoyed this show so much that I also watched/listened to every episode of The Danger Close Terminal List podcast (hosted by Jack Carr), purchased and listened to every audiobook, and have already started watching the series again (for the fourth time), and am looking forward to seeing more in the future.

The level of realism, attention to detail, weapons handling, storytelling, and overall production quality quickly captured my undivided attention in the first few minutes of Season 1, Episode 1, “The Engram.”

Once I saw Chris Pratt perform a proper admin reload and press check, I was hooked. Come to find out, the show is actually packed with real-world SEALs, Special Forces, and military veterans.

What Is The Terminal List About?

The show stars Chris Pratt as LCDR James Reece, a SEAL team 7 commander on his last combat deployment before retiring. He and his SEAL team, Alpha platoon, receive a target package on an HVT involved with chemical weapons – typical nasty dude, who needs a one-way ticket to the afterlife.

The SEALs in Alpha platoon soon realize they were set up – they were led into an explosive trap. What follows is a psychological roller coaster ride of action, deep feelings, and the severe consequences of pushing a man beyond his breaking point.

I’m going to break down all of the guns, gear, and featured brands in the series to the best of my abilities. I’m a huge gear and gun nerd. Since this is such an awesome show, I figured this would make a fun post, where I could provide links for fellow gear nerds to have an easy reference point for purchasing the guns, knives, optics, and more from the show.

Sources Used

I don’t normally do gear breakdowns from TV shows, but I genuinely enjoyed putting this one together for you. This is my first post, covering the show, and each subsequent post in the series will cover a single episode. If you’re interested in what kind of rifle James Reece used or what brands are featured in The Terminal List, this is definitely a series for you.

My primary source was Gary Tuers of Xtreme_props. He was the prop-master and in charge of setting up all the weapons for the show. You can find tons of behind-the-scenes pictures of the guns and gear used on the show on his Instagram page. Other sources include The Terminal List’s on-set photographer Justin Lubin, Jack Carr’s website and Instagram, the terminallistpv Instagram, Internet Movie Firearms Database, and Chris Pratt’s Instagram profile

Episode 1 “The Engram” primarily features the legendary HK416D rifle and Sig Sauer P226 Mk25 pistol.

Each member of Alpha Platoon was equipped with identical rifles, with the exception of the machine gunner.

THE TERMINAL LIST HK416 Breakdown

The exact specs and parts used for the HK416D rifles in The Terminal List have been confirmed by on-set armorer and weapons master, Gary Tuers of Xtreme Props. He was responsible for providing all of the prop weapons for the show and was the biggest source I used to compile this information.

Where You Can Buy The HK416 Rifle Used In The Terminal List Episode 1

Unfortunately, unless you have a magic lamp or Elon Musk monies, you’re not going to get your hands on a 100% genuine HK416.

Brownell’s managed to get several genuine HK416 parts kits a few years ago, but most of those parts are long gone. There is a civilian version of the HK416 called the HK MR556. These are available to the general public, and you can actually buy one today. The main differences between the 416 and the MR556 are the barrel and fire control group.

HK 416 $...

HK MR556 $3,500

The genuine HK416 has a 10.5-inch chrome-lined barrel and full-auto fire control group. The HK MR556 comes with a 16.5” heavier barrel that is not chrome-lined and a semi-auto fire control group.

The retail price for one of these HK MR556 rifles is right around $3,500.

Here is a video from Vickers Tactical, explaining the differences between the two rifles. Fun fact, Larry Vickers was involved in the original design and production of the HK416, while he was in The Unit. Another fun fact: the HK416 in the following thumbnail is the rifle used by the DEVGRU operator who shot Osama Bin Laden

THE TERMINAL LIST SIG P226 MK25 Breakdown

Overall Length: 7.7” Slide Finish: Matte Black

The SIG P226 MK25 is currently the standard issue sidearm of the United States Navy SEALs. In The Terminal List, this particular pistol has a pretty significant role in the first and second episodes. The inscription on the slide stands for “Long Live The Brotherhood” and features the Navy SEAL trident. The opposite side of the slide is engraved with “LCDR JAMES REECE.” Each member of Alpha Platoon had a matching SIG, engraved with their name. The holsters used in the show include a Safariland 6378 with a low drop, and  Black Point Tactical Mini WING™ IWB holster. The MK25s that Alpha Platoon was carrying during Operation Odin’s Sword were equipped with Surefire X300 weapon lights

Parts List

After the ambush during Operation Odin’s Sword, James Reece and Ernest ‘Boozer’ Vickers (Jared Shaw) were the only two survivors. Shortly after getting home to his family, Reece receives a call that Boozer had committed suicide. Apparently, he had shot himself with his SEAL team-issued SIG, which was a huge red flag for Reece. Boozer hated the SIG and preferred 1911s and .45 ammo. That discrepancy starts the roller coaster ride through James Reece’s Terminal List.

Where You Can Buy The SIG P226 MK25 Used In The Terminal List Episode 1

I’m glad you asked. ;) We carry the SIG P226 MK25 and you get one directly from us via our Gun Broker store. You can also pick up your own SIG P226 MK25 from SIGSauer.comEuroOptic.com, GritrSports.com, or Brownells.com. The price for one of these is hovering right around $1,200 at the moment. The BlackPoint Tactical Mini WING™ is designed to be worn appendix, but Chris Pratt preferred to carry it around the 5 o’clock position. If you look closely at the holster pictured below, you can see that the belt clips are reversed to accommodate his carry style.

Jack Carr personally uses a Blackpoint Tactical Mini WING and prefers to carry at the 5 o’clock position as well.

THE TERMINAL LIST Glock 17 Breakdown

The Glock 17 makes a brief appearance in The Terminal List, S01E01 “The Engram,” and is featured several times in later episodes. I’m not 100% sure it’s a 17 Gen 4 because the lighting is super low, and the actual gun isn’t really in focus. If you have inside info on this, please let me know so I can update this list, if needed.

After Reece goes to the clinic to have his brain scanned, the hitman in the CT room is using a Glock 17. The second assassin has Reece’s SIG and is going to attempt to make it look like he went crazy and killed his family and the doctors. Things don’t go so well for the assassins, and one of them is killed while the other takes a knife through his arm. (I’m working on getting the scoop on what exactly that knife was.)

Where You Can Buy a Glock 17 Gen 4, Like Used in The Terminal List Episode 1

Glock is arguably the most popular handgun brand in the world, so it’s much easier to get your hands on one than most of the other weapons from the show. You can very likely pick up a used Glock 17 from any local gun store in your area. If you prefer to shop online, you can order a Glock from Brownell’s, GritrSports, and Gun.Deals

I’m not 100% sure what brand the skull mask is, but it looks suspiciously like the Call of Duty: Ghosts skull mask. I’m going to go out on a limb and assume the wardrobe department just did a quick search for “skull mask” and grabbed the first cool-looking one they saw. This is pure speculation on my part.

Either way, here’s a link to one if you’re into the bad guy vibes.

THE TERMINAL LIST Tactical Gear Breakdown

Episode 1 is obviously packed full with tactical gear, so this next section will be fairly long. If you’re looking for a specific brand of plate carrier or pouch used in The Terminal List, this page should have the answer for you. Everything used in S01E01 “The Engram” will be listed here, to the best of my abilities, and includes links where you can buy each piece of kit. Once again, I relied very heavily on Gary Tuers from Xtreme Props and his Instragam posts about the gear used in the show.

Clothing and Accessories Used

I can’t find any “official” confirmations about the exact clothing, watches, shoes, or accessories worn during the mission. The good news is that I’m about 99% confident that I can ID everything. On that note, here is a list of the clothing, shoes, and watch that James Reece was wearing during Operation Odin’s Sword:

I also have the gear breakdowns for some of the other members of the SEAL team, including Rex, the dog. Leave a comment if you’d like me to add to this post and include them, as well.

Hooten Young Whiskey

After the failed mission, Reece and Boozer share a remembrance drink at a bar in country. The whiskey they are drinking is from a brand called Hooten Young, which was formed by two former Delta Force operators. It’s a very well-known, liked brand in the special operations community. In this case, it was used to remember the lives of the team members who were killed. You can get several different flavors and ages of whisky, ranging from $79.99 to $129 per bottle.

This is the description for their Barrel Proof 15-year whiskey:

"This limited-edition Barrel Proof American Whiskey was poured from second fill charred American oak barrels in commemoration of the 28th anniversary of the Battle of Mogadishu. On October 3rd, 1993, U.S. Forces met orders to capture Somali warlord Mohammed Farah Aidid as part of Operation Gothic Serpent. Hooten Young president and retired Delta Force MSgt. Norm Hooten helped lead this gruesome 18-hour mission for survival — a story eventually retold in Black Hawk Down."

Hill People Gear (DKPK) Decker Pocket Backpack

The backpack that James Reece (Chris Pratt) was wearing during his C5 flight home was made by Hill People Gear. This bag can be seen when Reece is picked up by Ben Edwards (Taylor Kitsch), as well as when Reece enters his house for the first time. It’s available in several different colors, including Multicam for $122 from hillpeoplegear.com.

Gatorz Milspec Ballistic Aluminum-Framed Magnum Sunglasses

Gatorz are very popular in the SEAL teams, so it’s no surprise to see these glasses show up so many times throughout the series. The exact style of Gatorz worn by James Reece is the Magnum Ballistic black on black. You can grab a pair for $240 or $144, if you don’t want/need the ballistic option.

Fun Fact: Jack Carr has been wearing and maintaining the same pair of Gatorz since 1998. He wore the glasses on his very first deployment, and they are very special to him. He mentions this a few times during his EDC videos and pocket dumps.

Finger Print Gun Safe

The fingerprint gun safe from The Terminal List S01E01 “The Engram” is actually a Cabela’s branded biometric safe with the logo removed. It features two levels and is designed to hold at least two handguns. You can pick one up for $129.97 at Cabelas.com. The safe is shown several times and in a lot more detail in episode 2 “Encoding.”

Resco BlackFrog Gen2 Black PVD on a Nato Strap

My watch-spotting and horology skills are pretty amateurish, but thankfully, there are guys like Watches Of Espionage who love to spot watches like this. Apparently, Chris Pratt (James Reece) wanted to wear military watches during specific scenes.

If you’re looking for a solid swiss dive watch with all the bells and whistles like sapphire glass, a unidirectional rotating bezel, and a similar look to the Resco Black-Frog, check out the Kore Essentials  Excursion watch

Conclusion & Final Thoughts

The Terminal List is packed full of just about every tactical brand you can think of. This breakdown is by no means an exhaustive list, and I actually left out several pieces of gear from the other members of the SEAL team. If this post generates enough interest, I may add more at some point. Just let me know if that’s something you’d like.

You can find all of the gear layout and weapon pictures I used at the xtreme_props Instagram page. I would not have been able to make a detailed list like this without the behind-the-scenes info and photos from Gary Tures, Justin Lubin, Jack Carr, and Chris Pratt

All of the brand names, logos, images, etc are all registered trademarks, trade names, or intellectual property of the photographer. I tried to cite image sources as accurately as possible, and any infringement or misuse is not intentional, so please let me know if you notice anything that should be corrected.

Most of the links to purchase the gear from the show are affiliated with the specific brand or are a large distributor of the brand.

If you found any factual errors, or have any additional information to add, please feel free to contact me.  I’d be happy to add more to the list.

Check out the other Terminal List episodes for more gun and gear breakdowns!
